What is MiniMax H3?
MiniMax H3 is an open-weight multimodal model that generates 4 to 15 second clips at 24 fps with native stereo audio in every generation — MiniMax's own spec, not a marketing line. We offer it on its entry tier: 480p or 768p output, a prompt, a starting frame with an optional closing frame, or up to 9 reference images that steer subject and style. What this tier does not give you is 2K, a seed or a silent mode, and the trade for that is price — $0.03 per second at 480p and $0.05 at 768p, which makes a four-second clip $0.12.
What is it good for?
Volume. When you need thirty variations of a six-second social clip and only two will survive the edit, paying a dollar a try stops making sense. At $0.30 a clip you can be wasteful on purpose, find the shot that works, and re-render that one on a stronger model if the final needs to be sharper. 03Honest limits
Where the entry tier shows
This is the cheap tier, and you should expect it to behave like one. Simple scenes hold up surprisingly well — the rain-street clip at the top is a straight render on this tier — but the more that moves in frame, the more it wobbles, and faces and small text are where I would look first before showing a client. The rest is about what this tier exposes. A starting frame works, and a closing frame with it — the model interpolates between the two — but frames and reference images are separate inputs, so you pick one or the other rather than combining them. There is no seed, so two identical prompts give you two different clips. Resolution stops at 768p — MiniMax's own 2K mode is not part of this tier. And the sound cannot be turned off: if you need silence, you will be stripping the track yourself.
One more thing worth saying out loud: the length you order is a target, not a promise. The six-second clip in the hero above came back at 6.6 seconds, and we have seen bigger gaps elsewhere in the H3 family. You are billed for the length you asked for, never for the overshoot, so it costs you nothing — but check the duration before you drop the file into a timeline. If any of this is a problem, Wan 3.0 gives you frames, seeds, 1080p and clips up to thirty seconds, and Gemini Omni Flash lets you adjust a finished clip by describing the change. Re-render the keeper if you need it sharper
Once a shot works, the prompt that produced it usually carries over to a stronger model. Draft here, finish there — that is the whole point of a cheap tier.
