"Nano Banana" is Google's consumer name for its Gemini image models, and the numbering doesn't follow the Gemini version numbers. That trips people up constantly. The original Nano Banana is actually Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, so plenty of pages you'll find while searching for "Nano Banana 2.5" are really about the 2025 model. They aren't the same thing.

So "Nano Banana 2.5" in 2026 means a successor to Nano Banana 2 (released February 26, 2026), not the old Gemini 2.5 model. If the pattern holds, it'll probably ship under a Gemini 3.x or later Flash Image id, with "2.5" kept as the marketing name. That part is my guess, not a leak.

Nano Banana 2.5 leak timeline

Everything public so far fits in about two weeks. I've listed only claims with a traceable origin.

Two things stand out. First, the sources are independent of each other: one came from app code, one from Arena, one from partner access. Second, none of it comes from Google. TestingCatalog has a decent record on Gemini leaks. Anonymous X accounts are a different story, even though @lyraxana got another pre-announcement call right the same week.

When will Nano Banana 2.5 be released?

Nobody outside Google knows the date. The most specific claim is from the September 18 partner reports, which expected a broader release "during the week of September 21". That's this week, as I write this.

How much weight should that carry? Some, honestly. Anonymous Arena testing plus a short partner window is what a model looks like right before launch, and a 24-hour partner window usually means a final check, not early research. But "expected this week" claims slip all the time, and a code string in an app can sit there for months.

My read: a launch in late September or October looks likely. A launch with the exact name "Nano Banana 2.5 Flash" is less certain, because the Flash naming might just be leftover from the old Gemini 2.5 Flash Image branding.

What features are rumored?

Treat every line below as unconfirmed. These come from tester impressions and the partner reports, not from Google.

• Three thinking levels: minimal, medium and high. Nano Banana 2 currently exposes only minimal and high, so a middle setting would give you a cheaper way to get better prompt adherence without paying for full reasoning on every image.
• 512px, 1K, 2K and 4K output. Same range as Nano Banana 2. No rumor so far about 8K or bigger canvases.
• Better than Nano Banana 2 overall. Most early Arena impressions describe a real step up, not a small tune-up.
• Strong text rendering. Testers called spicy-mayo good at text inside posters and product shots.
• Weaker on logic. @LuminaBench reported a failure on a Rubik's cube task and described the model as "strong at text but weak on logical tasks".
• Behind GPT Image 2.5 on world knowledge. That's the one area where testers didn't see it winning.

What's missing from the rumors is just as telling. Nobody has leaked a price, a context window, reference image limits or anything about editing. For most of our users, price is the one that matters.

Is spicy-mayo really Nano Banana 2.5?

Probably, but it isn't proven. Arena's blind battles hide the provider on purpose, and spicy-mayo can't be picked by name: you only see it if the random matchmaking gives it to you. The link to Google rests on output style and on the timing matching the code leak.

The partner reports are the strongest link, since they name spicy-mayo and nano-banana-2.5 in the same breath. If those are accurate, the question is settled. If they're not, spicy-mayo could still be a Google model under a different final name (it happens), or even a checkpoint that never ships.

How does Nano Banana 2 handle the same tests today?

Since the two headline claims about spicy-mayo were "great at text" and "failed a Rubik's cube", I ran both kinds of prompts through Nano Banana 2 on our platform to get a baseline. Both images below are unedited first attempts from Nano Banana 2 at 1K, $0.06 each on BananaBanana.

The text test asked for a concert poster with a bold headline "MIDNIGHT ORCHARD", a date line "Live at Harbor Hall, October 14, Doors 7:30 PM" and a price line at the bottom.

Every word came out right, including the small date line and the dollar sign. So the bar for "strong at text" is already high: to be noticeable, Nano Banana 2.5 has to do better on long paragraphs, small print or non-Latin scripts, not on a three-line poster.

The logic test asked for a solved Rubik's cube with a white top face, green front and red right side.

That one passed too, colors and geometry both. To be fair, it's an easier task than whatever spicy-mayo reportedly failed. We don't know the exact Arena prompt, and a scrambled cube or a mid-solve state is much harder to draw correctly. Still, it shows why a single Arena anecdote shouldn't decide anything. Will Nano Banana 2.5 be available on BananaBanana?

There's one case where waiting makes sense. If you keep hitting a specific Nano Banana 2 limit on one type of image and the job isn't urgent, a couple of weeks might pay off.
