Anime prompts across ten styles

Ten tested prompts spanning the genre — neon cyberpunk, hand-painted 90s film stills, mecha, magical girls, cozy slice-of-life and city pop. Each card shows the unedited result and the model behind it.

01How to prompt

How do you write an anime AI art prompt?

Anime isn’t one style — it’s dozens, and naming the era and technique matters more than the word “anime” itself. “Hand-painted 90s anime film still, soft cel shading, painterly background” produces something completely different from “modern digital anime key visual, crisp lineart, saturated gradients”. A reliable structure: era and medium first, then the character with two or three concrete design details (hair, outfit, expression), then the scene, then lighting and mood. Screen-language helps too: “key visual”, “film still”, “manga panel” and “opening-scene shot” each set a distinct composition.

Keep character descriptions original rather than naming franchises — copyrighted characters are refused, and original designs give you commercial-safe art. Every image below is the unedited first output of its prompt, generated on BananaBanana; iterate character designs on Lite at $0.03, then render finals on Nano Banana 2 or Pro.

03Technique

What makes these work

Name the era, not just “anime”

“Hand-painted 90s film still”, “modern key visual”, “80s city pop airbrush” — the decade and technique define the look far more than any quality keyword.

Use screen language

“Key visual”, “production still”, “manga panel”, “low-angle opening shot” — framing terms from the industry give you composition control for free.

Design original characters

Two or three concrete details — silver chin-length hair, translucent poncho, round glasses — create a memorable character that is safely yours to use commercially.

Keep a character across scenes

Generate your character once, then use that image as a reference on Nano Banana 2 or Pro to redraw them in new scenes, outfits and episodes.

06FAQ

Anime art prompts, answered

Can I generate existing anime characters?

No — prompts for copyrighted characters are refused. Describe an original character instead; you keep commercial rights to what you create, which matters if the art ships in a game, video or merch.

Which model draws anime best?

All three handle anime styles. Lite at $0.03 is excellent for flat cel shading and background art; Nano Banana 2 adds cleaner lineart and effects; Pro is worth it for painterly detail-heavy pieces like mechas and fantasy scenes, and for 4K poster output.

How do I get a consistent character for a comic or VTuber?

Create the character sheet first (one clear front-facing image), then attach it as a character reference in every subsequent generation and describe only the new pose and scene. See the character consistency guide below.

What aspect ratio works for anime art?

3:4 vertical suits character art and phone screens; 16:9 mimics film stills and key visuals; 9:16 for wallpapers. Set it at generation time rather than cropping afterward.
